TORONTO (AP) — Brady Tkachuk scored twice, Anton Forsberg made 31 saves and the Ottawa Senators defeated Toronto 6-2 on Friday night in the Maple Leafs' first game since losing All-Star Auston Matthews to a knee injury. Ilya Samsonov, who was scheduled to get the night off, made a surprise start and finished with 28 saves as the Leafs suffered just their fourth regulation home loss of the season.
The coach wasn't happy, Hartman knew it was a dumb penalty, and that led to him being healthy scratched on Thursday: Ottawa has three games before the All-Star break and two of them are against Montreal, which would make for great Forsberg starts.
In case you missed the news earlier today, the Vancouver Canucks announced that they've signed pending free agent Andrei Kuzmenko to a two year contract extension worth $5.5 million per season. But today NHL insider Nick Kypreos reported in his column for The Toronto Star that both the New Jersey Devils and the Dallas Stars have come on aggressive in their pursuit of Horvat and that both teams "want an extended playoff run this spring and seem willing to pay for it."
“He’s had a lot of years in the NHL and there’s not going to be a lot of years left in the NHL for him,” Sabres coach Don Granato said of Anderson. “It’s obviously nice,” said Power, who scored two goals in eight games last season.
After a relatively successful stint with the NHL club, Fredrik Olofsson is headed back to the minor leagues. The Dallas Stars have loaned him back to Texas as they try to accrue some cap space for the trade deadline.
He had four all of last season, so he's definitely scoring in bunches this campaign (it might be why he's over a point-per-game pace). The problem is that his points/60 minutes (2.15) is actually down from last season (2.17) as the team's shooting percentage has declined with him on the ice at 5-on-5.
DALLAS (AP) — Rookie defenseman Owen Power scored his first goal of the season 56 seconds into overtime and 41-year-old Craig Anderson stopped 29 of 31 shots in his 700th career NHL appearance as the Buffalo Sabres beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 on Monday night. “It’s obviously nice,” said Power, who scored two goals in eight games last season.
DALLAS (AP) — Rookie Owen Power scored his first goal of the season 56 seconds into overtime and 41-year-old Craig Anderson stopped 29 of 31 shots in his 700th career NHL appearance as the Buffalo Sabres beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 on Monday night. Jamie Benn and Jason Robertson scored for the Stars, who had shutouts in their last two.
To show how tight it is in the top four, the only thing keeping them ahead of the Leafs right now is their record. If not for a 5-3 loss to the Sharks, the Stars could have had a 4-0 week with multiple 4-0 wins, beating their other three opponents last week by that score.
