We’ve seen true freshmen defenders Malaki Starks and Mykel Williams make plays consistently all season long, but against TCU, the entire college football world got a glimpse of the next group of superstar Bulldogs. A freshman All-American, Starks could be one of the top defensive backs in college football next season.
Los Angeles, CA - For the second consecutive season, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are the kings of college football. That’s what the Bulldogs are going for in 2023.
The same could be said for tonight where the reigning national champions dominated the game from start to finish. The third possession would be a touchdown drive, but this time it was a Bennett pass to receiver Ladd McConkey for 37 yards that did the trick and gave the Bulldogs back their 10-point advantage after TCU managed to score a touchdown courtesy of a Max Duggan (14-22 for 152 yards and two interceptions) rush a few moments earlier.
The Wolverines will see quarterback J.J. McCarthy return, along with a number of key contributors from this season’s team. He hit on 20 of 24 passes for 279 yards and a touchdown in Clemson’s win over North Carolina in the ACC Championship Game, and will have some talent around him next year.
*The 38 points in the first half was a season high and the most in a half of a CFP National Championship Game. Georgia’s 17 points in the first quarter was a season high for a first quarter, the previous high was 14 (five times), and the most in a CFP National Championship Game.
It didn't even take a full half for Georgia to show that it was eager to defend its national championship against a TCU squad that was looking to cap a magical season on a high note. The Bulldogs took just 21 1/2 minutes to establish a 24-7 lead, went into intermission up by 31 and went on to finish with the most points in a College Football Playoff title game, downing the Horned Frogs 65-7 to become the first-ever back-to-back CFP champions.
The Bulldogs perpetrated the largest blowout in national championship game history, so much that Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett was pulled from the contest to receive a standing ovation with 13:25 left in the fourth quarter. 9:51 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — TCU forced Georgia into a third down play, but Bennett lofts one up for Bowers in the end zone.
He did score the team’s lone touchdown on the ground late in the first quarter but that was as close as they ever got the rest of the way. I just wish TCU was able to put up more of a fight against the Bulldogs as now this outcome will be used as fresh fodder to undercut future deserving teams who are only guilty of playing the schedule that’s in front of them.
The Georgia Bulldogs made some college football history, becoming the first FBS team in 10 years to repeat as champions with a 65-7 win over the TCU Horned Frogs in the College Football Playoff national championship game at SoFi Stadium in rainy Inglewood, California, on Monday night. Stetson Bennett scored for the second time on a run and Georgia added another score to its lead.
Georgia is one of the country’s leaders in 12-personnel usage (which is when an offense lines up with two tight ends and one running back). Much of the past two decades has seen football move more toward 10 (one running back, no tight ends) and 11-personnel packages (one running back and one tight end).
