Troy Fumagalli brings cerebral approach to Denver Broncos
That cerebral approach helped Fumagalli put together a decorated Wisconsin career, one capped by being named a finalist for the John Mackey Award given to college football’s top tight end. Derby led the position group with 19 catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns in 2017 before being placed on injured reserve and claimed off waivers by Miami – Denver now has two intriguing young players at that spot.

Who stood out in spring ball?
In this case, members of UW coach Paul Chryst 's staff were asked to identify a player whose development caught their eye during spring drills that ended Friday. He needs to catch up to his body and his length and all that stuff — he needs to be in the weight room — but when his muscles get bigger and they start pulling those longer limbs, the kid has great hands and phenomenal awareness of where he is.

Looking Ahead: Power and experience give offense ‘scary’ potential
"Coach Turner made a great point," said Penniston, who was also speaking for junior fullback Alec Ingold , "we've sat behind Troy (Fumagalli) and Austin (Ramesh) for a couple of years now. The Badgers will surely miss Fumagalli, a dependable receiver (135 career catches) and underrated blocker; and Ramesh, a punishing short-yardage runner and battering ram for the tailbacks.

Inside the Huddle: Big Ten chase starts Saturday
MADISON, Wis. — The outcome had long since been determined when freshman quarterback Jack Coan handed off to fullback Alec Ingold on what was Wisconsin's 68th and final offensive play in a 40-6 win at BYU. In concert with the Wall Street theme, Kirk Herbstreit identified one of his rising stocks: Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook , who completed 18 of 19 passes (.947) for 256 yards at BYU.

Lucas: The Next Chapter
Wright confirmed how much thought and deliberation that Taylor put into the decision largely because of the loyalty factor: a South Jersey native staying home to play for the state school. Salem High School's most famous alum is from its Class of 1968: former Penn State tailback Lydell Mitchell, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and a nine-year NFL veteran.

Baggot: Heart of the Action
You hear Florida Atlantic's drills dictated by an air horn instead of a customary coach's whistle; the voices of family members and friends calling out to UW junior kicker Rafael Gaglianone from behind the spectator railing; the loud inhale of sophomore inside linebacker Chris Orr as he takes a jolting whiff of an ammonia capsule. You feel the whistle of an airborne football zinging by your ear as Hornibrook warms up with a student manager amid a crowded bench; the sense of solemn dignity from watching junior tailback Chris James and true freshman cornerback Madison Cone kneel alone in reflection; the violent pop of every collision, especially those nearest the sideline.

Building trust: Neuville’s confidence growing at tight end
However, a leg injury slowed Neuville during Thursday's practice, opening the door for some young tight ends (like Luke Benzschawel and Jake Ferguson ) to get reps until his return. This fall, the Badgers have joined a growing list of NFL teams and colleges that have adopted the latest in safety innovation, a remote-controlled tackling dummy called the MVP, the Mobile Vertical Player.

Spring Ahead: Fumagalli and Co. will be key to offense
With his 47 catches (12.3 yards per reception), Fumagalli was the first tight end to lead the Badgers in receiving since Lance Kendricks caught 43 passes in 2010. Fumagalli, who ranks among the elite at his position in college football, and Fleck, who has moved on to Minnesota, will get to renew acquaintances on Nov. 25 in Minneapolis when the Badgers and Gophers engage in their annual Border Battle.
