Now 25 years in, Bettman is never off as NHL commissioner
For 25 years, Bettman has overseen the growth of the NHL from $437 million in annual revenue to nearly $5 billion, guiding the league into and out of work stoppages and expanding hockey's reach to places that never seemed a fit for the fastest game on ice. The Stanley Cup Final opens Monday in Las Vegas, where Bettman had a guiding hand in the expansion process that yielded the Golden Knights and led to the most successful inaugural season in league history.

The Phoenix Suns got what they earned: The top pick in the NBA draft
This will be the last year the draft is held under the current framework, with the team with the worst record having a 25 percent chance of winning the lottery, and the odds going down from there — as well as the top three spots being determined by the drawing of ping-pong balls. One of the legendary figures in the sport, West — now a consultant with the Clippers — was realistic about his situation, accurately pointing out in an interview on ESPN that he’s got an incredibly small chance of doing anything but walking out of Chicago with the 12th and 13th picks in this year’s draft.

Column: Hawks' traditional tapping of first-time head coach needs to pay off soon
And if you want to get really technical here, the listing stands as six straight first-timers when including Lon Kruger—one of the most decorated leaders in college basketball history (taking five different schools to the NCAA Tournament ... Kansas State, Florida, Illinois, UNLV, Oregon)—getting his first taste of NBA action way back in 2000. "It was critically important to find a dynamic teacher who could connect with and develop our young core, while instilling the culture and high standards we feel are necessary in a successful program," said Sclenk in a statement, immediately following his first coaching hire.
