Track & Field Sends Five to Compete in NCAA West Prelims at Sac State
Competing at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium will be Weslie Pearce (3000m steeple), Faith Makau (800m, 1500m), Tayler Fleming (long jump), Michael Kojin (200m) and Heinrich Van Niekerk (800m). Tayler Fleming will take on the field in the long jump, having qualified for the prelims with what was the conference's top mark at the time (20-4.50) at the Highlander Twilight on April 13.

The UCR women finished in seventh place with a team score of 75, while the men ended the weekend in eighth scoring a 43.The distance runners led the way on the women's side for the Highlanders, as seniors Faith Makau and Weslie Pearce combined for a trio of top-three finishes on Saturday. Makau's tough running in the 1500m (4:29.72) gave her a second-place finish, the best of any Highlander on the day.Pearce would lead the pack for a good while in the 5000m, eventually taking third with a mark of 16:54.13.Makau would also finish third in the 800m with a time of 2:09.35, followed by junior Cydney Branch in fifth place (2:12.61).Competing in her first career 400m final, sophomore Kenady Jackson finished in seventh with a 56.50.The women's 4x100 relay team of Sirai Thompson, Camille Deadwiler, Destiny Mitchell and Victoria Sandoval crossed the finish line in 46.65 to take fifth-place.In the shot put, sophomore Natalie Mitchell's first throw of the day would set a new lifetime best at 44-4.25, good for sixth overall.An exciting final in the men's 800m would go down to the wire, as sophomore Heinrich Van Niekerk (1:51.18) and junior Ethan Van Setten (1:51.51) took second and fourth, respectively, both finishing within half a second of first place.Senior Michael Kojin would participate in the finals for both the 100m and 200m.

To highlight the rest of the action that took place on the women's side, senior Breanna Standifer finished second in the discus throw with a 47.74m/156-7.00 measurement, which allowed her to post up eight points to her team's score. In the men's distance events, sophomore Xolan Brown , senior Austin Goins , and junior James De Mello all moved forward in the 800 after placing in fourth, seventh, and ninth, resepctively.

Freshman Anthony Reyes was the top collegiate finisher in the Long Jump, likely collecting an NCAA First Round qualifying mark with a lifetime-best leap of 24-06.50 (7.48m). Also doing well to position himself for NCAA First Round competition was sophomore Heinrich Van Niekerk, who recorded a lifetime-best of 1:50.06 in the Men's 800m Run, good for the second-fastest time in program history.

Track and Field Hosts Final Home Meet Highlander Twilight on Friday
With the exception of Thompson, this is the same Highlander team that set the all-time program record in the 4x200 Relay (1:38.46), also coming in UCR's last home meet. Aidan Olvera will be UCR's only competitor in the Men's Pole Vault, and he will be joined by Jose Castellon in the Javelin Throw.

Women's Track Distance Runners Represent Highlanders at Stanford Invitational
The Highlanders' distance runners represented UC Riverside Track and Field at the Stanford Invitational on Friday.Senior Weslie Pearce took second out of ten runners in her Women's 3000m Steeplechase heat with a time of 10:29.50. That was less than six seconds shy of her program record, set last year.Finishing with the Highlanders' fastest 1500m Run time of the season was senior Faith Makau, whose mark of 4:30.00 bested her previous season-best of 4:34.94, set at the UCSB/Cal Poly Meet earlier this month.In her outdoor season debut, junior Emily Sanchez finished in 14th out of 21 contestants in the Women's 5000m Run, recording a time of 17:30.85.Tomorrow, Makau will return to action in the 800m at the Sacramento State Mondo Team Challenge along with the majority of the Highlanders' forces.

Kojin Sets School Record, UCR Defends Home Turf in Impressive Highlander Twilight Showing
The 4x100m Relay team of Kenady Jackson, Camille Deadwiler, Destiny Mitchelle and Sirai Thompson continued to shine, finishing first with a time of 47.37 seconds. UC Riverside swept the medal stand in the Hammer Throw, as Jessica Tobias (48.57m, 159-04), Ashley Rodriguez (47.73m, 156-07) and Tori Teraji (46.93m, 154-00) went one-two-and-three.
