Toreros Trek Through Muddy Conditions at Paul Short

San Diego finished 16th (out of 44 teams) at the Paul Short Invite Saturday morning at Lehigh University, facing tough, muddy conditions on a hot fall day. USD had to race in longer spikes to trek through the muddy course. The Toreros faced strong programs competing in the Men's 8k Brown race, finishing right behind NYU and beating out teams like Saint Leo's, Holy Cross and Trinity. "I am pleased with the results but do believe that the team has another gear it could hit"Freshmanled the Toreros finishing 56th out of 360 runners with a time of 26:07. Today one of our freshmen took a leadership position and ran number one for us.The team developed a consistency in their training back at home, and I was glad to see them unfold with the same mindset in a large race.

Athletic Hall of Fame

In his senior year he was a finalist for the 2007 Walter Payton Award, the FCS equivalent to the Heisman Trophy, after tossing a school record 43 touchdowns while leading the nation in total offense and passing efficiency. Following graduation he got married and taught tennis under Ed Collins at nearby Rancho Bernardo Inn before accepting a head pro position at a private club in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Currently residing in North Carolina, he has flown back to the West Coast for alumni games, and joined a small but loyal group of Torero faithful in Tampa, Fla., to watch the team's historic upset of perennial power Connecticut in the 2008 NCAA tournament. He worked closely with the development of the Sports Banquet, USD's single largest fund-raising event for athletics; he was President of the WCC Executive Cabinet from 1983-1994; and he played an important role in seeing a dream become a reality with the opening of the Jenny Craig Pavilion in October, 2000.

Astoria OKs steep fines for parking near 'The Goonies' house

The Daily Astorian reports the City Council held a first reading of an ordinance Monday to modify city code and enhance the fees people will have to pay if they violate parking rules in the neighborhood. City councilors will hold a second reading and officially could adopt the ordinance at a November meeting. City Manager Brett Estes and Police Chief Geoff Spalding say the city already has posted signs saying "No Stopping," and "No Parking" in the area with only a moderate level of compliance. The neighborhood has long been a draw to tourists hoping for a glimpse of the house featured in the 1985 movie.

Hillsboro fourth-grader chosen to light U.S. Capitol Christmas tree

So begins the essay that earned Oregon's own Brigette Harrington a spot in the Capitol Christmas tree lighting this December. Brigette, a student at Jackson Elementary School in Hillsboro, was chosen out of a pool of more than 1,200 fourth-graders who submitted essays on the topic of "Find your Trail!" For her essay, Brigette used the format of classic holiday poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," more commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas," to write about the seasonal changes in Oregon. Kate Brown selected the winning essay, according to a press release, and showed up at Jackson Elementary to congratulate her in person.

Someone was murdered in the house you're about to buy: Should you get a discount? (photos)

People still talk about the man who sealed his dead girlfriend in the back room of their Portland Craftsman in 1975 because he didn't want to say goodbye to her or her Social Security checks. The Springfield house where a 38-year-old son was arrested in 2015 for killing his parents and, after the smell got to him, stuffing them into a large chest-style freezer, sold a year later for $194,000, when other properties in the neighborhood were valued at $263,000. In 2015, when Clackamas County deputies raided a dilapidated dwelling that was sarcastically nicknamed Risley Hotel, the place was reported to be "a squalid dive filled with drug addicts, rats and garbage," a "pesthole that plagued a peaceful Oak Grove neighborhood" and a place where sex offenders, drug sellers and other unsavory transients lived in a warren of makeshift rooms. The husband and wife, who don't want to be identified because they're still working with their real estate agent, put an offer on a house that was conspicuously undervalued.
